GoalsTop
What are goals?
Goals are targets you set to help you achieve a short term objective. For example, you can choose to run 20 miles over the next week and track your progress on Garmin Connect.
What Garmin devices work with goals?
Goals are not device specific. You can log an activity against a goal with any supported device. Some devices, like the Forerunner 310XT and Forerunner 405/405CX, have features that allow you to monitor Goals on the device.
How do I setup Goals and send them to the Forerunner 310XT or Forerunner 405?
There are 2 ways that goals are transferred to your device:

1. Automated send: after every activity that you upload to Garmin Connect, the Garmin ANT Agent will look for active goals and transfer them to your Forerunner 310XT or Forerunner 405/405CX.

2. Manual send: go to the Active Goals tab and click on Send to Device. A Goals file will be transferred to your Garmin ANT Agent and then wirelessly transferred to your Forerunner 310XT or Forerunner 405/405CX.

What’s the difference between History, Active, and Future goals?
History: goals with start and end dates that have both elapsed.
Future: goals with start dates that have not yet begun.
Active: goals with start dates that have begun but have not yet ended. Active goals are the ones you’ll be tracking your against current progress as you run or bike.
When does an activity apply toward my goal?
An activity has to meet the set criteria. Activities that you classify as Trail Running apply toward Goals set for Trail Running. The start date and time of that activity must fall within the start and end dates of the Goal.
How do I edit a Goal that I’ve already created?
1. Go to Goals page.
2. Click the Future goals tab.
3. Hover over a particular field and click to edit. The goal name, the goal target, start date, and the privacy settings are all editable fields.

If you want to change the Goal Type or Measured Over period, we recommend deleting that goal and creating a different goal with your preferred criteria.

Why can’t I edit an Active or History goal?
Once a goal has become active or has elapsed, you will not be able to amend any details of that goal. You can, however, delete any goal.
When creating a goal, what do the different “Measure over” periods mean?
7 days: you have seven days from the start date to log activity against your goal.
30 days: a goal will be tracked for thirty days from the start date.
Calendar month: a goal which is tracked over an entire calendar month, e.g. during February. Calendar month goals always start on the first day of any future month and always end on the last day of that month.
PowerTop
How do I get my Power data uploaded to Garmin Connect?
As long as you have the Edge 705 or Forerunner 310XT paired with a compatible power meter, you should be able to get Power data included with your activity during each upload.
What Power meters work with Garmin devices?
SRM and Quarq were the first 2 power meters to work with Garmin compatible devices. Power Tap came on board in Fall of 2008. As long as the Power Tap is ANT+ Wireless there should be no problem syncing the systems. If you have an existing system (Power Tap), you will need to get a one time use flash card update from Saris (about $100). As of 15 October 2008, new units out of the box work with Garmin compatible devices.
Can I customize my Power data on Garmin Connect?
Yes, you can customize how your power data is displayed in power zones. Just go to your Settings, select Training Zones, and then select Cycling. You have the option to define power ranges for seven zones according to levels you find meaningful or have obtained during performance testing.
Advanced WorkoutsTop
How do I create an Advanced Workout?
Currently this feature is is not available to Garmin Connect. You will need to utilize this feature in Garmin's Training Center if you would like to create Advanced Workouts.
PlayerTop
When viewing an activity on the Player, why doesn't the Player display all the data in my activity?
You're likely viewing an activity that was recorded over a long period of time with a lot of data. In the interest of loading the Player quickly, we've reduced the amount of trackpoint data that the Player processes and therefore the route may appear to take shortcuts.
Why does the current time (on the left side of the progress bar) sometimes exceed the total time (on the right side of the progress bar)?
The current time displays the elapsed time of trackpoints recorded along your activity. This would include moments when you pressed stop on your device or your device stopped recording in response to the absence of movement (if you had enabled the auto-pause feature). The total time figure, however, displays the amount of time that your device was actually recording during your activity. Therefore, if the device had stopped recording at any point, you will see that reflected in the time difference.
ExploreTop
Why don't I see an Activity in Explore?
Explore only displays activities that benefit the community. The following criteria are required for an activity to display in Explore:

  • It is a GPS activity.
  • Activity Type is categorized (e.g. Trail Running).
  • The activity has an Activity Name (e.g. Tahoe Rim Trail).
  • The activity is Public.
Why do I see Private Activities in Explore?
If you are signed in, your Private Activities are displayed in Explore. No one else can see these Activities, only you.

MotionBased MigrationTop
Can I use my same login information from MotionBased at Garmin Connect?
Yes. You should login to Garmin Connect using your MotionBased username and password, which happens to be your myGarmin account information as well.
I don't see all of my activities from MotionBased. Where are they?
Some of your activities may not have migrated because they were either large files or had some data peculiarities. We will run several phases of our migration script to eventually get all of your activities from MotionBased to Garmin Connect. In some rare cases, we may not be able to migrate your activity to Garmin Connect.
My values at MotionBased and Garmin Connect don't match. What happened?
Garmin Connect was built to better match the data from Garmin devices. As a result we are trying to best match the raw data produced by the device. In some cases we are using a different algorithm where calculations are being made. Even though the values won't match between both sites, the spirit of Garmin Connect is to best match the device.
My Elevation Gain/Loss numbers seem inflated. What happened?
Garmin Connect is using a different methodology to smooth elevation gain/loss compared to MotionBased. As a result, especially for Forerunner devices, the elevation gain/loss numbers will be inflated. We are still working on our smoothing algorithm and intend to run this across all activities at Garmin Connect in the future to more accurately reflect the actual gain/loss.
Where is my historical weather data?
Garmin Connect does not support weather at this time. We plan on introducing this feature at Garmin Connect. When we do, it will run against all past, present, and future activities at Garmin Connect.
Where is the Analyzer at Garmin Connect?
Garmin Connect does not support the Analyzer feature found at MotionBased. We plan on bringing this feature to Garmin Connect soon. When we do, it will be much more robust and customizable.
What MotionBased features are not at Garmin Connect?
The following MotionBased features are not found at Garmin Connect:

Saved Reports
Weather
Analyzer
Dot Racing
Viewports

We intend to bring these features to Garmin Connect but with significant improvements. Hopefully, you'll find some of the unique features at Garmin Connect along with the improved performance and user interface a major improvement over MotionBased.
When will Garmin Connect support the Foretrex and other Garmin outdoor devices?
Garmin Connect will support the Garmin Outdoor product line in the second half of 2009. In the meantime, we recommend that you upload activities from those devices to MotionBased.
I had a premium account at MotionBased. How does that translate at Garmin Connect?
At this time, Garmin Connect does not have a premium service. All of the features at Garmin Connect are free. We plan to introduce a premium service later in 2009. MotionBased customers with a premium account will be grandfathered into the Garmin Connect service for a period of time at no cost.
ReportsTop
How are averages calculated in Reports?
The following fields are calculated via arithmetic mean ignoring any activities where the value being reported is null:

Avg Distance
Avg Time
Avg Elevation Gain
Avg Elevation Loss

The following fields are calculated via weighted mean based on time ignoring any activities where the value being reported is null:

Avg Speed
Avg HR
Avg Run Cadence
Avg Bike Cadence
Avg Power

For example, a longer activity based on time will have greater influence on the above values than one shorter in time.
What does the term "Max Avg" mean?
This provides the maximum or best value of all of the average values for a given field in a time period. For example, if you see a Max Avg HR of 165 bpm, that means that one of your activities reported an Avg HR of 165 which is the highest Avg HR value within that time period.
Where is Pace in Reports?
Pace is currently not supported in Reports. We plan to implement pace shortly.
RSS FeedsTop
What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's a standard way for publishers to syndicate content and for users to get updates of content whenever updates are made for a specific topic. Garmin Connect is using RSS to help get the word out for all the great activities in which you and other Garmin users are engaging.
Why should I subscribe to Garmin Connect RSS feeds?
If you maintain your own blog, you can add an RSS widget that updates on your blog whenever you upload a public activity to Garmin Connect. This way all your friends and family can see all the cool runs or rides you've been doing. Just go to the RSS feeds from your Dashboard and add the Garmin Connect RSS feed url to your blog's RSS widget.
How do I get started with RSS feeds?
Choose an RSS feed reader from the many that are out there. Web based feed readers will simply ask that you register to their websites. There are also a variety of downloadable RSS feed applications that you can install on your computer. When ready:

1. Click on the RSS symbol on your Dashboard page.
2. Select the RSS feed reader that you want to use to view the feed updates.
3. Add the Garmin Connect feed url to your feed reader. Your RSS reader will begin to publish updates to you when there's something new to check out on Garmin Connect that fits your interest.
