Privacy Statement for Garmin Connect and Compatible Garmin Devices

Last updated: July 11, 2017

Your privacy is important to Garmin. We developed this Privacy Statement to provide you with information on how we collect, use, share and store your Personal Information when you use the Garmin Connect website, the Garmin Connect Mobile app and Garmin wearable devices or other Garmin devices that are compatible with Garmin Connect.

Other Garmin websites, apps and products that do not include a link to this Privacy Statement and include a link to a different Garmin privacy policy are governed by that privacy policy.

Ways Garmin Collects and Uses Personal Information

“Personal Information” is information that, either alone or in combination with other information collected, identifies an individual. When we combine other information (i.e., information that does not, on its own, identify an individual) with Personal Information, we treat the combined information as Personal Information.

When You Create a Garmin Account

When you create a Garmin account, we ask you to provide Personal Information, including your email address and name. You do not need to provide your full name, but you may if you wish.  You will use your email address and your password to login to your account. Your Garmin account will be password-protected.  You can add additional information to your profile, such as your location, types of activities you participate in (e.g., running, hiking, cycling, golf, etc.), and your gender, birthdate, height and weight. This information is used for purposes such as calculating the calories you burn during an activity and providing you with Insights about your activities.  Consistent with applicable laws and the choices available to you as described below under Your Choices Regarding Marketing Correspondence, Garmin may also use this information to send you information about Garmin products or apps that might be of particular interest to you.

When You Login to Your Garmin Connect Account with Social Media Credentials

You may choose to login to your Garmin Connect account using your social media login credentials (e.g., your Facebook login credentials). If you choose to do this, when you login to your Garmin Connect account using social media login credentials for the first time, you will be asked whether you agree that the social media provider may provide certain information to Garmin, such as your name, email address, profile photo, posts, comments and other information associated with your social media account.

All of this information is made available to Garmin by the social media provider due to the way the social sign-on configuration works, but of this information, Garmin only retains and uses your email address. Garmin uses the email address provided by the social media provider to associate it with your Garmin Connect account so that you can use your email address to login to your Garmin Connect account in the future if you no longer wish to login using your social media login credentials.

If you do not want your information to be shared with Garmin by the social media provider, then you can simply login to your Garmin Connect account using your Garmin account login credentials without using your social media login credentials.

When You Add a Garmin Device to Your Garmin Connect Account

When you add certain Garmin devices to your Garmin Connect account, we ask for additional information, such as your gender, height, weight, birthdate, activity level (low, medium, or high) and normal bed and wake times. This information is used for purposes such as calculating the calories you burn during an activity, providing you Insights about your activities and sleep, and setting your wearable device to “do not disturb” mode during your normal sleep hours. Consistent with applicable laws and the choices available to you as described below under Your Choices Regarding Marketing Correspondence, Garmin may also use this information to send you information about Garmin products or apps that might be of particular interest to you.

When You Sync Your Device and Upload Your Activities and Activity Data

You can upload activities (for example, runs, walks, swims, hikes, geocaches, adventures, etc.) and activity data (for example, steps, distance, pace, activity time, calories burned, heart rate, sleep, golf stats, etc.) from your device to your Garmin Connect account. This enables you to analyze your activity data, track your fitness goals, and, if you wish, share your activity data with others.  If your Garmin device has Bluetooth® capability and you connect it to the Garmin Connect Mobile app, then the activity data on your Garmin device will automatically be uploaded to your Garmin Connect account.

You control whether others can see your activity data by managing the privacy settings in your Garmin Connect account.  Your activity data is set to “Private” by default.

Garmin may access your Garmin Connect account to provide you product support if you contact Garmin’s product support personnel. Garmin may also use your activity data for purposes of providing you with a more personalized user experience. For example, if you upload activity data (such as steps, distance, pace, activity time, calories burned, heart rate, sleep, etc.) from your Garmin device to your Garmin Connect account, then you will be presented with an “Insights” section in your Garmin Connect account in which you will be provided with recommendations and motivational messages, as well as information and links to third-party articles that may be of interest to you based upon your activity data. You can opt-out of having “Insights” presented in your Garmin Connect account at any time by following the opt-out instructions on Garmin Connect or Garmin Connect Mobile.

When you sync your device through Garmin Connect, Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express we log data about the transmission, such as the Internet Protocol (IP) address used when syncing, the sync time and date, crash/diagnostic logs, geographic location of the device, information about your device, information about the network used to sync (e.g., Wi-Fi or cellular) and device battery level. We use this information to help identify and resolve syncing issues.

When You Connect Your Garmin Connect Account to a Third-Party App

If you enable your Garmin Connect account to access accounts you have with other app providers, such as your MyFitnessPal or Strava account, we will obtain information about you from such account (e.g., number of calories consumed in a particular day from your MyFitnessPal account or courses and segments from your Strava account). This information is used to supplement your activity information in Garmin Connect with information you have provided to such third-party apps.

You may also choose to provide Garmin with access to your friends list or contacts through Facebook, Google or your mobile device. If you choose to do so, Garmin uses such information to help you add your contacts as connections in Garmin Connect. Garmin does not use your friends list or contacts for purposes of marketing to your friends or contacts.

When You Communicate with Garmin

When you interact with our customer support representatives via email, telephone, online or in person, we may collect Personal Information, such as your name, mailing address, phone number, email address and contact preferences; and information about the Garmin products you own, such as their serial numbers and date of purchase. We also may create event logs that are useful in diagnosing product or app performance related issues, and capture information relating to the support or service issue. We use this information to provide you with customer and product support. We may access your Garmin Connect account in order to assist us in providing you the necessary assistance.  To improve customer service, subject to applicable laws, we may also record and review conversations with customer support representatives, and analyze any feedback provided to us through voluntary customer surveys.

We may use Personal Information to communicate with you, including communicating with you about your account or transactions with us, giving you important information about your products or apps, sending you notice about material changes to this Privacy Statement, and, consistent with applicable laws and the choices available to you as described below under Your Choices Regarding Marketing Correspondence, sending you offers and promotions for our products and apps.

When You Grant Permissions to the Connect Mobile App

To help give you a more personalized user experience, Garmin Connect Mobile requests permission to access certain data from your mobile phone. These permissions are optional, but some features may not be available or fully functional if you decline them. You can change your mind (either to opt-in or opt-out) at any time through the settings menu of your mobile phone.

Here are permissions we request, along with an explanation for why we make each request:

  • SMS, Phone, and Calendar: Used for Smart Notifications to send SMS, Phone Call and Calendar Event notifications from your mobile phone to your Garmin device.
  • Contacts: Allows you to add your contacts who are Garmin Connect users as connections, send LiveTrack invites to your contacts, and select one or more of your contacts as your emergency contact(s) for Garmin devices that have Incident Detection features.
  • Location: Allows weather data to be sent from your mobile phone to your Garmin device, used to search for nearby Segments and Golf Courses, and allows location data to be displayed on your activity course and segment maps in your Garmin Connect account.
  • Camera: Allows the “Find My Phone” feature that is available on certain Garmin devices to use your mobile phone’s LED flash as an alert.
  • Photos/Media/Files: Allows the app to create a temporary file on your mobile phone during the syncing process that contains the data received from your Garmin device before uploading the data to your Garmin Connect account.
  • Device ID & Call Information: Used for Smart Notifications to verify if you have accepted or denied a call before sending the notification to your Garmin device. Also used by the “Find My Phone” feature to send the alert to your mobile phone.

For additional information about permissions, please see here.

When You Use Location Features on Your Garmin Device

If you activate the GPS feature on your Garmin device during an activity, then location data associated with your activity will be uploaded to your Garmin Connect account when you upload your activity data from your Garmin device so that location will be displayed on your activity course and segment maps.

When You Buy Products on a Garmin Website

If you click on a link in Garmin Connect to buy a Garmin product, you will be directed to buy.garmin.com.  The privacy statement on buy.garmin.com governs the collection of Personal Information when you purchase a Garmin product from Garmin online.

Other Uses of Personal Information by Garmin

Garmin also may use Personal Information for internal statistical, marketing or operational purposes, including generating sales reports and measuring and understanding demographics, user interests, purchasing and other trends among our customers.

Ways You May Share Your Personal Information or Direct Garmin to Share Your Personal Information

Activities and Activity Data

Your activities and activity data associated with your Garmin Connect account are set to “Private” by default. You may decide to allow others to view your activities and activity data by changing the privacy settings in your Garmin Connect account.  You may also choose to join other Garmin Connect users in Challenges and Leaderboards. When you interact with others in these ways, you will be displaying your data relating to the Challenge or Leaderboard (e.g. aggregate number of steps during the duration of a steps Leaderboard or Challenge) even if your privacy settings in your Garmin Connect account are set to “Private”.

If you have an ANT+ enabled Garmin device, you can wirelessly transmit data (including activity data) from your Garmin device to other ANT+ compatible devices (e.g., fitness equipment, heart rate straps). Depending on the device, transmitting your data to another device via ANT+ may require pairing your Garmin device to the other device, or it may happen automatically when you are within range of an ANT+ compatible sensor or receiver. In some circumstances, such as a wellness program using a Garmin vívohub, your device may use ANT+ to sync activity data to a hub, which then uploads the data to Garmin’s servers.

Garmin will not transfer or sell your personal activity data to any third party without providing you prior notice and obtaining your consent.

LiveTrack is a feature available on some Garmin devices that enables you to send a link to people of your choice that allows them to see the real-time location of your device.  Anyone with access to the link will be able to see the real-time location of your Garmin device, so you should use caution in determining to whom you want to send the link and be sure that you trust them to not send the link to others whom you do not want to be able to view the location of your Garmin device.

If you choose to post an invitation to view the location of your Garmin device on third-party social networks, then, depending on the privacy practices of those social networks, it is possible that persons in addition to those whom you intended to invite to view your location information could have access to such information. Accordingly, you should use caution when making such an invitation via third-party social networks, and you should carefully review the privacy practices of such social networks.

Data You Direct Garmin to Share

You may direct us to share your Personal Information with other individuals or entities. For example, you might authorize us to permit a third party, such as your wellness program provider, or an app, such as MyFitnessPal, Strava, Training Peaks, etc. to access your activity data in your Garmin Connect account. We will not do this without your consent. Once you direct us to share data with a third party, the third party’s handling of your Personal Information is the responsibility of that third party. If that third party is an entity, you should carefully review that entity’s privacy policy. You can choose to stop sharing data with a third party at any time within your Garmin Connect account.

If you enter a sweepstakes, contest or similar promotion, we may use the information you provide to administer those promotions. To the extent that the terms and conditions of any such promotion regarding the treatment of Personal Information about you conflict with this Privacy Statement, the terms and conditions of the promotion will control.

Comments You Post

Garmin Connect has features through which you can post information, messages and materials. For example, you can post a comment on a Challenge. Please note that any information you disclose through such features or otherwise on our sites may become public information, and may be available to visitors to the sites and to the general public. We urge you to exercise discretion and caution when deciding to disclose Personal Information, or any other information, on Garmin Connect.
